New JMQ Video coming soon

On a typical Tuesday night in Manhattan, bands stream in and out of the odd web and flow of The (famed) Music Building on 8th ave. We’re just one of those bands, waiting downstairs for a few minutes, until we’re in and on our way to Studio Chill on the 8th floor. We captured our tiny circle in rehearsal on video and are working on releasing it soon. 3 camera angles, live mic and PA, and we dressed for the occasion.

Billy Geoghegan of Brown Paper Tickets came by with his gear, filmed the band and did a walk through of the rehearsal building with a special guest tour guide. I’ll be back soon with the goods.

Summertime Update – gigs, songwriter festival, CD

Hi All! It’s been a minute, but there are some excellent things on the horizon for the Trio and I. Check it out!

Summer gigs (make me feel fine):
August 27th – 7pm – Hunters Point South Park – Free, family friendly
I actually scouted this place out. It just to the left of Gantry Plaza in Long Island City. This is the GREEN addition to that whole plaza directly across from midtown Manhattan. The view is still phenomenal and the sunset colors are something to see. We’ve been lucky to play against this backdrop several times and have some great shots from these gigs. The trio will be playing from 7-8pm and we will have horns for that show, which includes Kevin Batchelor singing a few numbers as well. Come bring the family, beach blankets, chairs, food, etc. There is a great shop there that sells food, beer and wine as well. Here is a link to the site.

September 3rd and October 1st – First Thursdays at Espresso 77 – 9pm – Free, all ages
Can’t forget that. 7 years and still going strong. I’ll be hitting the solo thing pretty hard those for those two shows, busting out a lot of catalogue. Come on down.

BIG NEWS AT ESPRESSO 77 – They are expanding and they need our help. Check out the homepage above for details on how to give and what you can get for giving.

Fall Gigs (no song parody for this one, sorry)
September 26th – 11pm – LIC Bar – 21+
While this is a trio gig as well, this is also the return of KEVIN & JONNY. KB and I will be playing originals as well as some classic American and Jamaican Rhythm & Blues covers. We love this place and its people. Come join us.

The Dripping Springs Songwriters Festival – October 16-18
I am happy and humbled to have been accepted into the 2nd annual Dripping Springs Songwriters Festival in the heart of Hill Country, Texas. This up close and personal festival is geared towards keeping it raw – just the writer and his/her voice with his/her own guitar. I’m in some talented company and am looking forward to bring my style of writing into the fold. Thanks to Jim Halfpenny and all the good folks that enjoyed my new record and asked me to come join.

Jonny’s going to SXSW in 2015

Great news! Just bought my ticket to Austin for South By Southwest. Although I haven’t heard about an official showcase gig just yet, I’m running on faith. So far, it’s worked out. A Stingers reunion gig has been booked for Saturday, March 21st. I’ll keep everyone posted as more gigs come around. Have a great weekend…Jonny

Release shows a big success!!!

The CD release shows this past weekend for Somewhere You’ve Been were a tremendous success. Thanks to the great musicians that I play with and the great people that support us.

On Friday night, we had a real blast at Espresso 77, celebrating both my work and Afzal Hossain’s latest art showing, entitled Speak Louder. Afzal and I are great friends and he opened his cafe to me back in 2007. Seven years later, and I’m still playing there every month. I’ve made great friends through this gig and the cafe is a second home for me. It was a fitting place to celebrate the release of this record, as many of the songs were played live for this first time in that very room. In addition, it was super sweet to have my daughter Isabella and my parents and several family members present to celebrate this moment.

On Saturday night, The Trio plus the Urban Blight horns hit the stage at the LIC Bar. We played the full album and then opened the 2nd set to new songs, Kevin & Jonny material and whatever else we could muster up by the end of the night. The sound was fantastic and the vibes were just right. Thanks to Gus Rodriguez for hosting us and to all the people that came to celebrate.

Pics and video on the way…!!!

Happy New Year

Hi everyone!

I just wanted to wish all a peaceful and fun end to 2013.  Like all, I have great hopes for 2014 to be even better.  Here are a few pieces of music news that I am looking forward to:

– The trio and I are making progress with our debut record.  We are about to go into mixing mode and have a nice batch of tunes ready to go.  We are looking at Summer 2014 for the official release.

– Kevin Batchelor and I are already busy for the start of 2014.  Our Jamaican Rhythm & Blues project (Kevin & Jonny) will open the year at Espresso 77 on January 2nd. Shortly after that, our ska project, Grand Concourse, will be playing at Tammany Hall with a group of soca, rock and ska bands for our good friend Walker Hornung’s birthday show.  This takes place on January 10th.  Check my calendar page for details.

While we look forward to new things in 2014, I’d like to mention a few things that will be missed after 2013:

– Two Boots of Brooklyn – we were happy to play the last show here, but we’ll miss the venue tremendously

– RIP – Cedric IM Brooks, Lou Reed, Yusef Lateef, Nelson Mandela, JJ Cale, Richie Havens, George Jones, Ray Price, Ray Manzarek, Leroy “Sugarfoot” Bonner, Donald Byrd

looking forward to a great year and I wish all the best to everyone.

Jonny
